Tragedy in Russia: Angara Airlines Flight Crashes in Far East; No Survivors Found

In a devastating aviation tragedy, a Russian passenger aircraft operated by Angara Airlines crashed in the Amur region of Russia’s far east on Thursday, killing all 49 people on board, including six crew members and five children, according to early reports from Russian state media.

The ill-fated Antonov An-24 aircraft disappeared from radar while approaching Tynda, a remote town near the Chinese border. Rescue teams have since located the burning wreckage on a mountainside roughly 16 kilometers (10 miles) from the intended landing zone.

Preliminary Cause: Crew Error in Poor Visibility Suspected

Initial investigations suggest that the crash was likely caused by pilot error during landing, compounded by low visibility conditions in the area, reported Russian news agency TASS.

The aircraft, which originated from a Siberia-based hub, lost contact with air traffic control shortly before its descent into Tynda. It vanished from radar without sending a distress signal, raising immediate concerns.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry stated that 40 people were officially registered on the passenger list, while regional authorities later confirmed the total onboard number at 49.

Authorities Respond Swiftly to the Crisis:

Governor Vasily Orlov of the Amur region confirmed the tragedy on Telegram, writing:

“All necessary forces and means have been deployed to search for the aircraft.”

According to the Amur Civil Defence Agency, a large-scale emergency response was quickly initiated:

  • 25 rescuers and five emergency vehicles were dispatched to the crash site.

  • Four aircraft were placed on standby for aerial search and rescue operations.

  • Helicopter teams scanning from above reportedly found no signs of survivors among the burning fuselage.

    A Region in Shock

This tragic crash has sent shockwaves throughout the Amur region and across the country. With five children among the dead, the emotional toll is profound. The aircraft was on a regular domestic route, and such a disaster raises pressing concerns over safety protocols in extreme-weather regions of Russia.

Emergency teams are continuing to work at the site to recover remains, assess the scene, and support grieving families. A formal investigation has been launched to determine the full circumstances leading to the fatal crash.

    About the Aircraft

The Antonov An-24, developed in the Soviet era, is a twin turboprop aircraft primarily used for regional flights. While considered a workhorse in Russia’s aviation fleet, several aging units remain in operation, especially in remote areas like Siberia and the Russian Far East.
