Ex-MP Prajwal Revanna Formally Charged with Multiple Counts of Sexual Assault by Bengaluru Court

In a major development in one of Karnataka’s most high-profile criminal cases, a special court in Bengaluru has formally charged former Member of Parliament Prajwal Revanna with multiple serious offenses, including rape and the electronic transmission of private images. The formal charges were filed on April 3 by Justice Santhosh Gajanan Bhat.

Revanna, a former Janata Dal (Secular) MP from Hassan and the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, now faces a litany of charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act. These include rape, repeated sexual assault, sexual harassment, assault with intent to disrobe, voyeurism, criminal intimidation, and destruction of evidence. He has also been charged under Section 66E of the IT Act for the unlawful electronic transmission of private images.

The case originated from allegations made by a domestic worker, who told investigators that she was repeatedly assaulted by Revanna during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2021 at his farmhouse in Holenarasipura and later at his Bengaluru residence. According to the Karnataka government’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was set up to probe the case, Revanna used his influence to coerce and manipulate the victim, subjecting her to threats and surveillance to ensure her silence.

The SIT investigation revealed that Revanna allegedly filmed the assaults using his mobile phone and later destroyed the device to cover up the evidence. These allegations took a dramatic turn in April 2024 when explicit videos—purportedly involving Revanna and several women—were leaked online, sparking national outrage and intense media coverage.

In response to the uproar, the Karnataka government formed the SIT on April 27, 2024, to conduct a comprehensive probe into the matter.

As the legal proceedings advance, this case continues to draw widespread attention across the country, with calls for justice and accountability growing louder.
