INDIA Bloc Mulls Impeachment Move Against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar

New Delhi: The Opposition’s INDIA bloc is reportedly exploring the possibility of initiating an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The proposal was discussed during a meeting of INDIA bloc floor leaders held on Monday, August 18, 2025. This move comes in the wake of growing tensions between the Opposition and the Election Commission, following allegations of voter list manipulation made by Congress.

Opposition Upset Over CEC’s Handling of Voter Fraud Allegations

The CEC had addressed these concerns at a press conference over the weekend, attempting to counter accusations that the Election Commission is biased in favour of the ruling party. However, Opposition leaders remain unconvinced and view the Commission’s actions as partisan.

One senior leader from the INDIA bloc stated that, even though the numbers in Parliament are not currently in their favour, initiating an impeachment motion would be a symbolic yet serious demonstration of their objection to the CEC’s conduct.

What the Law Says About Impeaching the CEC

Under the provisions of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, the Chief Election Commissioner can be removed from office in the same way as a Supreme Court judge.

This involves the passage of a motion in both Houses of Parliament with a two-thirds majority. In order for such a motion to be tabled, it must be backed by at least 50 Members of Parliament.

Given the current composition of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the INDIA bloc is unlikely to secure the numbers required to pass the motion. However, their intent is to register a formal protest and increase pressure on the Election Commission.
